Personal, poignant, sometimes painful, yet powerful memories of the Civil Rights Movement from a few of the men and women who served on the front lines or played a vital role behind the scenes.

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr Day, PRI presents this archive audio presentation of an hour-long special broadcast from “The Tavis Smiley Show.”

Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton talks about her time working in Mississippi as a young law student and a member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). Danny Glover talks about what he remembers most from that turbulent time. Actors Ruby Dee and Harry Belafonte; U.S. Representatives John Lewis; former King attorney Clarence Jones; Reverend Garner Taylor; activist Marian Wright Edelman and many others talk about their experiences and memories of the time.
